Our new conservative government has employed a sledgehammer to crack a few nuts when it comes to disability benefits. My neighbour, who is arthritic, diabetic, rheumatic, alcoholic, paranoid schizophrenic, former drug addict, has emphysema, enflamed nerve endings, and can only stand for ten minutes, let alone walk 100 yards to the local shops, now has to physically prove she's disabled by travelling 15 miles to some governmental health office (not a hospital or her local doctor--that would allow too many people to abuse the system, apparently) and they don't do home calls.

If she doesn't go, her benefits get cut off.

Dat is sum vintage tragic irony right there! So dry! So sharp!

Do these people ever think about those who will be subjected to their law?

I think they do and then laugh an evil laugh. seen it too many times.

I got told I should just "suck it up" in re: pain earlier. lolno asshole. I've wished for a long, long time that I could invent a "pain transfer" device: push the button, intended recipient feels what you feel for the set amount of time.

'twould be so useful for disbelieving doctors, that.

dear potheads in my program:

I get that fighting the war on drugs is your way of sticking it to ~the man~ but please don't say that the most victimized are those people in jail for dealing. The most victimized and hurt are those of us who are denied affordable, effective, appropriate pain treatment because of a stigma on narcotics and thus have to spend their lives in agony.

not someone who knowingly sells illegal drugs.

---

dear otherwise wonderful people in my project group:

I wouldn't have expected this of a self-selected group of feminists [or at least people for women's rights], but I really shouldn't have to spend five minutes the first meeting reminding everyone that anything we design [we have to design a memorial] has to have disability access. guys. seriously. I'm the class's token gimp, I know this, but it's still really icky being disappeared like that when I'm RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOU.

(emphasis mine)

Sorry -- not to harsh on your rant or anything cuz I agree that that was an uncool thing to say, but can you please refrain from talking about who is THE MOST victimized in any given situation? Because I could give you a long list of other people also suffering from The War On Drugs (or suffering in pretty much any situation, ever) (like, I don't know, people of color disproportionately targeted/abused by cops) and I don't think it is productive to lay claim to any one group having it worst.

so apparently this guy in my class deserves... nay, NEEDS, to be thrown out of the program because he's "too distracting."

he looks like he talks to himself, and is a bit ... jerky? like, some would say "spastic" but the implications of that word are kinda gross. anyway. so he's a bit different, and this girl thinks he needs to be thrown out.

...

yeah, he has epilepsy. seriously, that just squicked me out so very, very hard. ick. so because he's got a medical condition he doesn't ~deserve~ a higher education? fuck you.
