So, I went out to dinner with my folks tonight. After dinner, Dad went out to warm up the car while Mom sat with me as I finished my coffee. She and dad have both been dieting since spring, apparently because Dad's doctor lectured him about blood pressure/cholesterol/deathfatz back then. So they've both lost weight, and Dad in particular has also brought his cholesterol and his BP down to much less scary levels, though he's still on meds for both. And his doctor congratulated him on it and even said that he'd rather see dad work on staying healthy at his current weight than keep trying to lose more and more weight and then inevitably regain it - which isn't perfectly HAES, but since Dad is still well into the "overweight" BMI category was surprisingly non-wanky of the doctor. So where does the fat-phobia come in? Mom's now mad at the doctor, because Dad is no longer "as motivated to keep losing." Gah. My dad is in good health (before the diet, they both ate really badly and rarely if ever exercised, and now they get a lot of veggies and some whole grains and lean meat and go for walks whenever it isn't too cold or slick) - so good for him and his age that even Dr. "No Deathfatz!" acknowledges that Dad is doing really well and doesn't need to be *thin* to be healthy. But my mom is still obsessed with both of them making it to their "goal weights" (what they weighed in their late 20s/early 30s - they're now almost 60), rather than any specific health goals. I'm not a fan of diets, but i'm glad that they're eating better and trying to get more exercise - I'm really happy that Dad's health has measurably improved. I just really wish they'd focus on their health rather than their size - Mom's current annoyance really kind of gives the lie to the "it's for our health" line she started out with.

Not cool. :C

My dad and his girlfriend have this problem as well. K (his girlfriend) is pre-diabetic and hypoglycemic, and she blames it on her weight. I was really sad to hear her say that she felt like something was wrong with her because of her weight. (Emphasis on 'wrong'. That's how she said it. It was really sad.)

Isabel, has your mom looked into lopping off limbs? It may sound extreme but I hear weight loss surgery is all the rage and think of all the poundage that would melt away without one of those pesky legs?

The concern trolls are the best part. "I seriously don't give a shit about what you think of my health or my attractiveness."
"But you're unhealthee and unattractive!"

Thanks for the link!

The comments section is aggravating, but that's a good post. I tried to post a comment but it was confusing. Apparently I can only preview my comment. Maybe I need to log in.

I like the post overall, but

You know what's shameful? A complete lack of empathy.

maybe we could avoid stigmatizing lack of empathy while we avoid stigmatizing fatness.
