Okay, now I'm really annoyed. I deleted another spam post just now. But they registered *after* I had done all that supposed fixing stuff with Newly Registered Users. Now I really don't know what's going on!

Oh dear.

I wonder... I see a spam poster who is in both "registered users" and "newly registered users" despite only having one post. I'm going to go make a new account and see where it has posting access.

It looks like new accounts go straight into "registered users" even though they're also part of "newly registered users", and posting access is cumulative rather than exclusive.

It worries me that they're getting past the registration captcha, though. Those things are supposed to be pretty solid.

Damn. I guess I will have to do some research on how to restrict access to the registered users group. Or maybe we will have to make a new group called "actually registered users" and physically move legit members into that group as they come up, and put the same restrictions on the current Registered Users group as is on the Newly Registered one.

This is complicated!

I am wondering if the new surge is in any way related to the fact that there's a new version of phpBB available, which hasn't been installed - because it's something Harriet has to do, and why bug her if this version works just fine.

This is above my level of geekability. I deleted another spam thread and banned the user. Let me know if it is thwarting your efforts to figure it out and I'll let them hang.

Is it worth maybe advising members not to respond to obvious spam but just report it, so we're not left with random threads where the spam OP has been deleted but the responses are left?

Great, now they're mocking us with fake politeness in their spam intros. Just flagged another one over in SWBCD.
