1. As a Guest (not logged in), here is a list of all the subfora I can see from index.php:

Fugitivus
- harrietj Post Discussions
- No-Name Bloggers
- Rape FAQ
- Stuff What Boys Can Do
- Street Luv
- A Daily Dose

Board Administration
- High Noon
- Moderators
- Suggestions, Problems, or Concerns
- Forum Rules

Hellos and Goodbyes
- Introductions
- Leaving Fugitivus

Other Discussions
- News
- what is this
- Everything Else
- Movies
- Books
- Gaming
- Music
- Elsewhere On the Internets

Serious Time
- Other
- Abusive Relationships
- Rape
- Recovery
- Youth-Oriented Serious Time

Privilege
- Educate Me 101

Burnout
- Cute Things
- Good News
- Shit That Restores Your Faith In Humanity

Now the list of all the subfora I can see when logged in as a new user who hasn't posted anything yet:

Fugitivus
- harrietj Post Discussions
- No-Name Bloggers

Board Administration
- High Noon
- Suggestions, Problems, or Concerns

Hellos and Goodbyes
- Introductions
- Leaving Fugitivus
(this section is the same)

Other Discussions
(this section is the same and quite long so I won't reproduce them all here)

Serious Time
- Youth-Oriented Serious Time

Privilege
Burnout
(these sections are empty!)

Some of those sections are a lot shorter. A lot. Is that supposed to happen? Obviously I won't know until I post this how many of those will reappear once I have a post under my belt, but prima facie, I find it weird that logging in cuts my visibility permissions in half. I mean, I can't even see the 101 forum. That seems counterproductive.

2. The forum registration email came from harrietj at fugitivusdotnet. That looks like a real email address; in fact, it looks like Harriet's. Maybe that's intentional, but most fora I frequent like to send their automated email from a noreply@whatever.domain address so administrators don't get flooded with replies from new users, so I thought I'd mention it on the off chance it wasn't.

I hope this message has been helpful rather than annoying. Now I'll go see what my visibility permissions look like after my first post...

Edit: Nope, no change. Total fora visible as guest user: 29. Total fora visible as newly registered user with 0 or 1 posts: 15. I also tried setting a birthdate to see if there were any age restrictions, and that didn't change anything either.

Mods:

I went in and changed the email address to noreply@fugitivus.net (I think).

I checked the forum permissions for the registered users group, and sure enough, it was weirdly mishmashed. I think this was something I accidentally did when setting things up -- I copied permissions rather than going through each forum individually. Registered users now have access to everything except the moderator section. I didn't change the permissions for Newly Registered Users; I figured you might have much more specific ideas of what you want Newly Registered Users to be able to access, and didn't want to step on toes.

Thanks, LHex.

You're welcome. Glad I could help.

Yep, I can see the same 29 forums now whether I'm logged in or not.

There also seems to be something wrong with the pm system. I'm not getting the option to send pms to people or a link to pm people under their name in a thread. I half suspect that this is an anti-abuse mechanism (or that I'm being blind/stupid and not seeing it).

You sure? Try again now that you've made a post. I see little PM buttons everywhere, myself.

I would also find it great if you could upload avatars. Now there are only a few people, but I am REALLY bad with names and mostly remember people by pictures... for me it would be a great help to know who is who.

Are avatars that one can upload oneself necessary, or would a default avatar package suffice? I am not sure just yet which type would be easier on the fugitivus.net bandwidth. It depends on whether the site would host user-uploaded images or whether they would be hosted externally.

I don't know what would work better to not make the board slow down but I think for now an avatar package would work and be great!

I noticed that spoiler tags don't seem to be enabled, and was wondering whether you might consider allowing them. They're useful for a number of reasons other than just posting actual book/film/other media spoilers; I've seen them used on other forums for the hiding of large pictures, so as to make a page shorter and easier to scroll through. They're also useful if part of your post contains a potential trigger; you can write the non-trigger part of the post as normal, and then hide the possibly triggering sections under a spoiler with a warning.

Good point about triggers, Graphite. I think that's an excellent idea. (Are spoiler tags even included in phpBB? They didn't use* to be, but the last time I frequented a phpbboard was before 2006, so what do I know.)

*Apparently this is the "correct" way to say it, according to the learned prescriptivists of the internet. It looks wrong, but so does "didn't used", and when I think about it, this way does seem more logical. Why do I care about these things? And why is the font size for "small" 85?
