[Warning] Hi everyone! How are you doing? Me? I'll let the link do the talking.

Quote:
What drew attention to it is the text [on the shirt]. Look at the 7th line down, which says, “‘Yo, let’s get ‘em. Let’s drive-by egg these transvestites”

There is a second reference to egging “trannys” in the text, and the last line of the paragraph is “That was fun shit.” ...

That’s a shirt for kids, in case you forgot. For children. The clothing chain Zellers has pulled the shirt in Canada after complaints and ESPN has apologized.

It’s a good example of the normalization of harassing gender non-conformity, how we socialize boys into non-compassion for others, and the association of disrespectful behavior with being hip. “Trannys” aren’t really people whose feelings matter, they’re jokes, targets for youthful pranks, whose harassment would make a funny story later…or hopefully sell a lot of shirts now.

I just don't even know what to say. A kids t-shirt for heaven's sake! Now I know why I've always avoided shirts with ton of text on them. I mean I didn't feel that great before unfortunately, but just ugh. Really?

That's appalling D:< Also anger-making is the commenter at that link who couldn't wait to start telling people that they were over-reacting, and the shirt designers probably didn't understand English, so it's somehow totally OK that a shirt for kids is encouraging transphobic violence. I now have the stabbity wrath.

That's terrible. :l I don't understand this being on a kid's T-shirt. I just don't. And I want to punch that commenter in the face as hard as I possibly can.

… I think today is really going to suck, hard. We're wrapping up class and doing presentations and one of the groups keeps referring to a literary character as a “transvestite.”

and this is from Proust, and Odette is a woman... except apparently in this one obscure translation where the pronoun is "he" rather than "she." and so they went on about how maybe "she" is "actually a transvestite."

ARGH.

I think this fits here.

When signing up for a YouTube account, there are your usual fields [username, password, date of birth, etc], but they also have a gender field. which... has two options: male, and female. and you can't leave them blank, you have to choose one.

woohoo. :/

ooh yeah gender fields, "fun" stuff. Sadly, very limited options are way too common.
What I almost hate even more is being presented with three mutually exclusive options of "male", "female", and "transgender"; So I'm like (and please pardon my nerdy BASIC syntax):
Code:
10 I want to put female!
20 But I don't want to be erased as a trans person!
30 But I don't want to be degendered, so...
40 GOTO 10

And it leaves genderqueer and nonbinary people even *more* out of the loop (pun totally intended, augh, okay, sorry nonprogrammers but I had to say that too)

Just... augh! It isn't that hard to have an optional fill in the blank form. If you want for some extra "entertaining" reading, I can dig up some of the controvery surrounding making the gender field in diaspora a plaintext form, some of the commenters where abandoning all logic and getting aggressive trying to dream up reasons why this project *needed* the gender binary.

No matter how many options they give to choose from in mandatory gender choice fields like that, I always wish for at least one more: "Get stuffed, you wanker, what makes you think you can *demand* that information from me?"

Ugh Backpack, I can see how that would be unbelievably frustrating and wrath-inducing. Framing "transgender" as a third gender, or as an un-gender the way that format seems to is just...full of fail. I'm sorry :C

Ugh. Conan makes me laugh, but he keeps using the T word on his show. You'd think he would have learned after what happened last time, but apparently not.

Shame on you, Conan. ):<
